We are sending 13 players to summer field hockey camp in Boone, thanks to our team fund raising. This means 15 of our 16 second and third year vets will attend summer camp or Futures in 2006.
Way to go, Pirates!
We will arrange car-pooling later this month and collect final checks for delivery in June. (posted May1; updated May23)
Chapel Hill HS is hosting a summer league again this year for high school players. Games will be played between 6 and 8 pm on Thursday evenings from June 15 to Aug 3. A $35 fee pays for refs and a team t-shirt/uniform.
This looks like another great way for players to get ready for the fall season. The league may be open to graduating seniors, too. You can download an email-friendly registration flyer from the Teen Opportunity section of our Play page. (posted Apr26, dates changed May04)
We are proposing to form a Field Hockey Boosters club to solidify support for the Riverside field hockey program. Here are some preliminary bylaws you can download and mull over. (posted Apr26)
This is the date NCHSAA allows fall sports teams to start official practice (except for football which starts a week earlier).
Time to start planning for summer field hockey camp at Appalachian State in Boone, NC. The 4-day camp runs July 12-15 and costs $335 per player, assuming we send 10+ players. You can obtain more information from the App State web-page and brochure.
We are arranging winter and spring fundraising events in hopes every player who wants to go can afford to do so. Stay tuned--details to follow by e-mail. (posted Nov29)
Players, coaches, and parents are invited to the year-end team party at Megan's house starting at 7pm. Eat! Relax! Take embarrasing pictures! Listed to speeches which are 20% shorter than last year, thanks to the block schedule. (posted Oct31)
Team photos of both the varsity and JV will be taken Wednesday, Nov 2nd, at 3:15pm. Players should dress in their home uniforms (white jerseys and socks) and be prepared to turn in both home and away uniforms immediately afterward. (posted Oct31)
Where are all of those photos, you ask?
Here is what we have so far. If you wanna see more, you gotta send more!
You can send photos as e-mail attachments, but please limit total size of each batch to about 5MB. Digital photos work well on the web if the subject is in focus and covers at least 1/6 and preferably 1/4 of the picture area. This assumes you have a 3MB sensor in your camera and you just want a 640x480 image for your computer desktop. I can usually correct other photo problems by digital editting. (posted Oct31)
Congratulations to 7 Pirate players who received East Region Honors. (posted Oct31)
Re-start, re-start, re-start. East banged home a free hit cross with 10 minutes left to score the lone goal in a game dominated by fouls, slips, and crazy bounces.
There was no shortage of effort by seniors on Senior Night. Co-captains Amy Lloyd and Nia Galas and midfielder Roxie Zerbonia led our offense with their energetic play after a wild East hit knocked co-captain Megan Carr out of the game early in the first half. Lani Seelinger played strong in goal despite poor footing conditions, and defender Sasha Shaykevich and forward/back Christine Calderwood played their best games of the year.
The JV battled to a scoreless tie in the preliminary contest. Goalkeeper Sarah Mooreland blocked a flurry of shots midway through the second half to preserve the shut-out.
The varsity finishes a frustrating season with a record of 6 wins and 9 losses; the JV winds up with 3 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. (posted Oct27)
Come celebrate Senior Night as Riverside says good-bye to 4-year players Megan Carr, Amy Lloyd, and Sasha Shaykevich and to 2-year players Nia Galas, Lani Seelinger, Christine Calderwood, and Roxie Zerbonia. The varsity has a bit of a score to settle, so we expect good games from the juniors, too. (re-posted Oct 17)
Where are the pictures, you say? Here!
The Pirates had the Tigers on the ropes in the second half, but an untimely mistake with seven minutes left cost us a a penalty stroke. A Chapel Hill mid converted, and a few minutes later, a Chapel Hill forward tacked on an insurance goal when she (illegally) deflected a head-high ball into goal.
Riverside started the game sluggishly, with midfielder Megan Carr and defender Kriddie Whitmore keeping us in the game while Chapel Hill tried to pressure our goal. The tide turned early in the second half, when midfielder Diane Saunders raised her game above the competition and defender Hannah Findlay closed down attackers all over the field. Senior Christine Calderwood played her best game of the year, and co-captains Amy Lloyd and Nia Galas came on strong, too. Unfortunately we failed to convert some great goal-front passes, and we made a few too many defensive mistakes in the circle.
One heck of an effort by everyone, ladies! A game to remember, despite the outcome.
The JV lost 1-2 despite dominating play for most of the game. Chapel Hill scored two late goals when we rotated several starters out of the game. Freshman Christina Romano and junior Shannon Farrish played very well, along with sophomores Ashlie Calderwood and Katie Forbes. (posted Oct19)
#3 Maryland comes to Chapel Hill Sunday to take on #4 North Carolina. Both teams play excellent defense, so an overtime game may be on tap. The game starts at 1pm at Henry Stadium (behind the Law School). Admission is free, and the view is good.
By the way, all six ACC teams are ranked in the top 20 for the second straight week, including the top 4 spots. (posted Oct 20).
The Pirates can keep play-off hopes alive with a win in Chapel Hill this evening against the conference-leading Tigers. The JV plays at 5:00pm followed by the varsity at 6:30pm. (posted Oct19)
Mike Marks reports that he and the Charlotte Latin AD have cancelled the game because of marginal field conditions.
The stadium field remains bumpy, but it is dry and the footing is much better. Maybe some players can try out the field briefly later his week to see if we can play here next Wednesday (posted Oct19).
Yep, once again with only 24 hours notice, our schedule has changed. We will now play Jordan Tuesday at Jordan instead of here at Riverside. Players should wear their home white uniforms instead of purple.
Senior Night has been moved to the East Chapel Hill game on October 26th.
No problem re-arranging your plans again, right? (posted Oct 17)
Thought everyone would like to know that Shannon is doing well after getting medical attention this evening.
Hope you can get a good night's sleep, Shannon! We look forward to seeing you smiling again real soon. (posted Oct13)
Appalachian State sophomore Julie Nagel died last Saturday from injuries she suffered in a car crash the night before. Our hearts go out to her family, teammates, coaches, and friends. (posted Oct14)
(posted Oct 6, re-written or updated 5 times including Oct 17)
There will not be a PAC-6 tournament nor an East region play-off this year. The top two teams, as chosen by East region coaches, will travel to Mt. Tabor on October 29th to play each other, with the winner playing the winner of the West region tournament later in the day.
Why this happened remains unclear. The NC High School Athletic Assocation has been blamed, but it has NO jurisdiction over playing rules and scheduling for less popular sports like field hockey and lacrosse. This must have been a decision by PAC-6 athletic directors, and it smells vewwy fishy to me... (posted Oct 12)
In order to guarantee a trip to Winston-Salem, the Pirates must beat conference leader Chapel Hill next Wednesday plus beat Jordan and East Chapel Hill by at least two goals (added Oct14)
Number 2 Maryland is coming to Durham this Saturday to take on number 3 Duke. There could be some offensive fireworks, and admission is free. The game starts at 1pm on the East campus turf field aka Williams Field. (posted Oct 6)
The Pirates delivered a gutty effort but succumbed to a well-schooled offensive attack. Positioning miscues left Cavalier attackers unmarked in the circle, and despite some unexpected mid-field passing success, our offense generated few quality shots on goal. Some mighty strange officiating just added insult to injury.
The JV lost also, 0-5, and for the same reasons, too. However, two of the goals came late against our second team, and sophomore Sarah Moorefield played great in goal, making spectacular stops on drives and rebounds. Shades of Jenny Schwartz.
The varsity record falls to 5 wins and 7 losses while the JV record drops to 3 wins and 3 losses. Both teams return to action Monday night with PAC-6 rematches against Jordan. (posted Oct 6)
The varsity will play before the JV on Wednesday. The varsity game starts at 4:15pm, while the JV game will start at 5:30pm unless the varsity game goes to over-time. (posted Oct 4)
The Pirates were all on their games, but lost their fifth game in a row on an early break-away. On defense, junior Hannah Findlay harrassed the Saint's mid-field leader while junior Caroline Lance mopped up behind. Sophomore Sarah Moorefield played well in goal, blocking and clearing shots away, while senior Amy Lloyd turned in a strong two-way performance in mid-field. The difference in the game was coaching--the St. Mary's players have improved their individual skills and they have learned how to work the ball into good shooting positions.
The JV picked up it's third win 2-0. Sophomore Ashlie Calderwood led the shut-out effort, while sophomore Aly Hignight scored both goals.
Both teams play again on Wednesday against defending private school champion Durham Academy. (posted Oct 4)
The team got on the bus, but the A-game got left behind. (posted Sep 27)
Wednesday's game against Myers Park club has been cancelled--they are unable to come (updated Sep 27).
The Pirates and Wildcats played 60 minutes of scoreless hockey, each team missing its mid-field star. As time expired, two defensive errors cost Riverside a penalty corner and then a penalty stroke. Unfortunately the East player slipped her shot into the goal and ended the game before overtime. Diane, Nia, Roxie, and Lauren played hard on attack, filling in for injured Megan, while Kriddie, Lani, and Caroline shut down the East attack. The varsity record slips to 5-4.
The JV also lost, giving up two goals in the final eight minutes to even its record at 2-2. (posted Sep 26)
Riverside and Parrott traded garbage goals in a mid-field dogfight. The Pirates had a half-dozen good opportunities to put the game away in regulation and overtime but failed to finish. With the sun fading, the teams agreed to move on to strokes. Once again our opponent's first stroker scored, and our strokers could not get an equalizer past the keeper.
The varsity closes out the first half of the season with 5 wins and 3 losses. Next week is a busy one, with East Chapel Hill on Monday, Ravenscroft on Tuesday, and Myers Park on Wednesday. (posted Sep 21)
An opportunity missed to win a sloppy game. Juniors Caroline Lance and Kriddie Whitmore anchored an improved defense with senior Lani Seelinger making several nice stops in goal. Unfortunately a lackadaisical Riverside offense never got untracked despite the energetic efforts of senior Roxie Zerbonia.
The varsity record drops to 5-2. Next up is a hungry Parrott Academy team, tomorrow in Kingston.
The JV dropped its first game of the year, losing 1-3. (posted Sep 20, updated Sep 21.)
Coach Stone has decided to hold Senior Night on October 10th when we play Jordan. This date should allow us to reschedule a rain-out. We don't want to lose our senior night celebration as happened several years ago. (posted Sep 19)
Charlotte Latin will be driving north to play us here at 11am on Saturday, October 22nd. The game provides a challenging late-season test, as Latin should battle Durham Academy and Charlotte Country Day School the following week for the 2005 private school championship. (posted Sep 17)
Riverside came out flat in the first half and gave up an agonizing slow roller in the second. But sparked by senior co-captain Nia Galas, the Pirates roared back in the next 10 minutes when junior Diane Saunders scored from the top of the circle and junior Lauren Yankes pounded home a Megan Carr pass.
The varsity record improves to 5 wins and 1 loss. Next up is a key conference match-up at home versus Chapel Hill.
Elsewhere in the PAC-6, East scored in the second half to eke out a 1-0 victory over Jordan. (posted Sep15 updated Sep17).
Next week's home game against Chapel Hill has been moved from Monday to Tuesday to accommodate the Chapel Hill coach. This means the varsity will now play two games back-to-back next week and three games back-to-back the following week. (posted Sep 14)
For the fourth year in a row, a scoreless Riverside-Jordan game went to overtime. Senior Megan Carr scored on a penalty corner during 7 vs 7 overtime, but an official disallowed the knee high shot claiming it passed too close to a defender! The game went to penalty strokes. Jordan scored on its first attempt, and three Pirate strokers could not even the score despite a spectacular stop by goalkeeper Lani Seelinger which kept Riverside close. The varsity record falls to 4-1.
Earlier, the JV cruised to the first conference victory of the year with a 2-0 win. (posted Sep 12).
Former Riverstar stars Jenny Schwartz and Anna Myers will be playing with the NC State club team Sunday, September 18th at Duke. The game starts at 5pm on Williams Field on East Campus. Bring those bells and come watch 'em play! (posted: Sep 11)

The varsity extended its win streak to four with a hard-fought 2-1 victory, while the JV opened its season with a 1-0 win.

Time to start collecting salable items from your attic, basement, and neighbors for our annual fall fund-raiser. The proceeds pay for most of our equipment, travel, and off-season training, so the more we sell the more the team can do.
We are also looking for two parents to coordinate the sale. If one of them is you (or your mom or dad), please contact us at <fieldhockey @mindspring. com>. (posted: Sep 2)

The varsity outplayed two of three opponents but had difficulty finding the net, tying one game and losing two by one goal each. The JV had more success, winning one, tying one, and losing one.

Discussions are underway about summer camp at Appalachian State (July 7-10) or perhaps William and Mary (June 18-21 or June 22-25). We would like to know who wants to attend which camp by March 1st. We will try to reach a consensus date, collect deposits, and register players before Spring Break (late March).
You can check out these two camps and others starting from the NC Summer Camps page of our web-site. (posted Feb 14).
